Finally, a perk. The one other Chinese staff member in the office gave me a box of Ferrero Rocher (which has become the Chinese New Year tradition among Chinese, at least in L.A. County). I'm so glad for this new tradition because authentic Chinese New Year candy quite sucks. See the cough drop correllation pictured.
And safety comes first.

Purple cough drops? What kind of crazy-ass cough drops are you buying?
Authentic Chinese New Year Candy can be quite handy if the Chinese New Year happens to fall during cold and flu season. Imagine a New Year blissfully free of the annoying sound of hacking and throat-clearing! All the better for enjoying amazing fireworks! Your fancy-pants Ferrero Rocher won't help with that.
*cough cough sniff* (sucking cough drop)
Are you Chinese, then? Well, 'Chinese-American'... I don't know why I thought you were Korean. See, this country has got me so messed up! With it's racist-anti-racism-political-correctness-over-sensitivity-eggshell-walking-on ways!
See, things are so messed up now, that when I see a person of Asian origin, I'm told I'm just being an 'ignant whitey' if I ASSUME they're Chinese. Like assuming all people from South America are Mexicans. Not that there's anything wrong with Mexicans... or Chinese...
I've been living here toooo long - see how I'm all defensive and awkward?
Bottom line is, sharing a box of Ferrero Rocher is all we truly need to distract us from our differences!
...And as a Caucasian, I'm a sort of 'asian' too, sister!
Rock on!
PS. I fell asleep before midnight on 'my' New Year. May I attend 'yours'?
Hey, S,
Happy New Year. As you know, I was quite oblivious of the whole thing until you reminded me, and then I promptly forgot.
I like your "refreshing modern look" and your obvious, conscientious attempt to increase the number of your posts, although it was a bit inconvenient to have to spend so much time catching up on the ones between Nov. 30 and Feb. 01 and then between Feb.01 and today (Feb. 09).
treeperson, I once made the mistake of signing up for the email updates of Sylvia's blog, but my inbox just became unmanageable!
You really have to make the effort to schedule some time for yourself to sit down and work your way through the latest entries. After all, Sylvia bothers to put so much time into writing it, it's only polite that we take the time to read it!
Everybody shut up! I can't think beyond your sarcasm to write anything. Besides, I'm busy celebrating Chinese New Year, can't you see?
*glances at the pile of gold foil wrappers*
Yeah... we can see!
